MOTHER CARBON

IThe inheritance

We did not build this Earth. We keep it.

MOTHER Carbon brings tomorrow's climate payments into the present, so that the projects which deliver them can be built today.

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.Ecclesiastes 1:4

Edmund Burke called society a partnership between the living, the dead and those who are yet to be born. The Earth is the oldest form of that partnership: received in trust, held for a time, and owed, in better condition, to people we will never meet.

IIA young civilisation

Still in the morning of our history.

We warm our homes and carry our goods on energy the planet spent hundreds of millions of years laying down, and we spend it in decades. To learn to flourish without drawing down that inheritance is the defining work of this century. It is also, for now, among the least financed.

Look towards the horizon

IIITwo ways to fail

The work of repair has been entrusted to two kinds of guardian, and neither has kept faith with the future.

The reckless builder

Spends the inheritance to warm a single generation. Growth without care.

The anxious keeper

Guards the inheritance by refusing to touch it. Care without growth.

The one who raises

Holds the inheritance and lifts it higher. Care that makes growth possible.

Between the two lies the oldest office of all: to raise.

IVThe mother

Gentle in the hand, firm at the line.

The paediatrician and psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott called what a good parent provides a holding environment: a space secure enough that a child may venture, falter and grow. Decades of developmental science have confirmed the shape of it: warmth without condition, and limits that do not move. MOTHER carries that posture into finance, in seven principles.

Held, never held back.

Read the seven principles

VWhat a mother builds

The future has already pledged to pay for repair. Its money arrives too late to build it.

Buyers now commit to carbon removal years in advance, yet pay only as each tonne is delivered. The projects that would deliver those tonnes must first be built, and must be financed before they can be built. Between the pledge and the payment lie years; it is in that interval that the work stalls.

MOTHER closes that interval by bringing tomorrow's payment into the present.

A signed pledge, examined with rigour and recorded beyond the reach of quiet revision, becomes something a licensed lender can advance capital against today. MOTHER weighs the evidence, shapes the agreement and keeps the record; the lending, and the judgement it demands, remain with the lender.

  2. AssureMOTHER weighs, shapes and records
  3. LendA licensed partner lends against the pledge
  4. BuildThe project is built today
  5. DeliverEach tonne is delivered and verified
  6. RepayThe buyer pays, and the loan is repaid

And the circle closes, only to open again for the next.
